The Deluxe version adds several features such as “Darkness” and “Mix” controls, and a switchable release time. More often than not, Devil-Loc ends up staying where I try it out.Īn example of Devil-Loc used in a typical parallel compression routing scheme I have found it particularly useful for beefing up impact and explosion sounds, adding grit to sweeteners or explosions, or just throwing it wherever the hell I feel like when I can’t figure out what else something needs. With experimentation, however, you will find a wide variety of uses for this plug-in in the realm of music and sound design. It sounds great on individual sources or the entire drum-kit, as well as sounding great as an insert. Perhaps the most common use of Devil-Loc is as a parallel or “NY” style compression for drums, with the compressor on an auxiliary track with a bus routed from the source(s). Using only the Crunch knob, you can use this plug-in as a simple gritty lo-fi gain plug-in, without adding any compression via the Crush knob. The Crunch knob controls the make-up gain, while also adding it’s own flavor of distortion. The interesting thing about this knob is that it is almost impossible to add in any compression without getting distortion, similar to the Level-Loc. The Crush knob of Devil-Loc essentially controls your compression level. The release is also variable depending on the setting of the crunch knob, going from 1.7 seconds normally to a whopping 22 seconds when completely saturated. The attack is variable, according to input level, making the performance a tad unpredictable, but often in a good way.
#Soundtoys compressor manual#
You will notice the lack of attack and release knobs – the attack, while variable, hovers around 1.3 ms, according to the accompanying manual (which, for the sake of laughs, resembles a poorly copied manual from the late 60’s or early 70’s). These boxes were used on all sorts of sources, but many engineers found them to be particularly useful for drum busses to achieve a lively and aggressive sound.įeaturing only 2 knobs, crush and crunch, the Devil-Loc is not particularly daunting or intimidating to use. Rather than smoothly and transparently compressing audio, the Level-Loc gave back an aggressive, severely smashed and distorted signal. This plug-in was designed to emulate the Shure Level-Loc, a mixing limiter/compressor that became very popular when used in the wrong ways. The Soundtoys Devil-Loc is a distorting compressor (or “audio level destroyer”, according to Soundtoys).
